Life Member: Alma Kristensen

Awarded 2014

Alma has been teaching Gentle Yoga at U3A Melbourne City annually since 2005, sometimes teaching two yearlong classes per year because of the high demand for her course.

Following her retirement in 2004 from a career in nursing, Alma pursued an interest in various alternative health practices. Yoga has been an important part of Alma’s life since the early 1980s. Although Alma’s teaching is mainly classical Yoga, she has an eclectic approach because she finds that most branches have something valuable to offer. Alma’s study of stillness meditation and the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali have further deepened her understanding of yoga.

Alma’s students write:

Alma embodies all the philosophy that yoga espouses: that the mind, body and spirit are all one and cannot be clearly separated. Every Tuesday from 10am, Alma has so generously given of herself over many years, and for some years taking consecutive sessions in a day! Formidable at any age!

Always encouraging, never demanding, thoughtfully guiding

Students also noted the appropriate and lovely music which accompanies her narrations during relaxation times.

Based on this sustained and conspicuous level of voluntary contribution, Alma was strongly commended for and awarded Life Membership of U3A Melbourne City in 2014
