Volunteering
U3A Melbourne City has no paid staff. It relies solely on the efforts of our members who give their time generously as volunteers, whether as tutors and group leaders or behind the scenes.
Become a Class Tutor/Activity Leader
Our volunteer tutors and activity (“Let’s Do”) leaders are the backbone of the organisation.
To be a tutor, you don’t need a background in teaching or lecturing, or to be an expert in your field! Tutoring is an opportunity to help others discover a subject or skill that you’re passionate about. ‘Let’s Do’ leaders are organisers rather than teachers, bringing their group together to enjoy activities like walking, cycling, movies and more.
If you are interested in becoming a tutor or Let’s Do leader, please send us an email, outlining your idea for a class/activity. Don’t forget to include your full contact details. Our Course Coordination team will be in touch to guide you through the process.
Other Volunteering Opportunities
Our classes and activities could not run without the support of volunteers behind the scenes. You don’t need any particular expertise to be involved, though we are always especially keen to hear from members who have skills and experience in Finance, IT or Education. To get an idea of what our volunteers do, click here.
You can express your interest in volunteering by logging into your Member Portal, clicking “Update Profile” and ticking the areas that interest you.
Why Must I Be Registered to be a Volunteer?
All volunteers must be formally registered to ensure:
- coverage by our Victorian Managed Insurance Agency (VMIA) insurance cover,
- compliance with the Volunteering Victoria rules,
- compliance with legislation requirements, including Victoria’s privacy-related acts and public safety regulations,
- compliance with the U3A Melbourne City’s Code of Conduct.
To become a Registered Volunteer, you must be a financial member of U3A Melbourne City and fulfil a role in U3A Melbourne City assigned by a Team Leader/Tutor/Committee member.
