Russell retired as a remuneration consultant in 2017. In the same year he joined U3A Melbourne City primarily to play bridge. He became Vice President in 2018 and President from 2020 to 2024, then he became Vice President again in 2025. He co-leads the Wednesday cycling group and offers the occasional short course on travel.
