Voltaire – Philosophy – “The Age of Reason’’
24 October @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Join Russell Goulbourne, Professor of French Literature at Melbourne University, as he explores the real Voltaire, a central figure of the Enlightenment, through visual images of him produced in his lifetime.
Voltaire’s legacy for us is one of rejection of bigotry and superstition and a belief in reason accompanied by tolerance and freedom of speech. But was this brilliant historian and writer, whose life was as dramatic as his plays, an original philosophical thinker or simply a publicist for the thoughts of others? Russell’s illustrated talk is followed by a Q & A and refreshments.
Location: Blue Room, Multicultural Hub, 506 Elizabeth Street, opposite Queen Vic Market
Date: Thursday 24th October, 2 p.m. (approx 2 hours)
