As a retired prosecution barrister, when joining U3A in 2015 Don introduced short courses in Criminal Law. His students were divided into jury-like discussion groups drawing on actual trial evidence, materials from key authors on the case and other resources. Don led students to examine each case in depth and reach their own verdict on the defendant‘s guilt, often different from the outset.
During COVID Don pivoted to tutoring a Novels course on Zoom before converting to face-to-face delivery over the past 2 years. Don selects novels from an eclectic range of genres, eras, author backgrounds and gender. The class format has proved immensely popular.
Awarded 2024.
